Life Before Dragon Medical Speech Recognition
East Parade Surgery used traditional dictation methods around ten years ago. The team stopped using this solution in 2011 and went back to manual typing of consultations, letters and reports.
However, they wanted to find something to improve the productivity of the whole team, not just the ones who could type well!
Finding Their VoicePower
East Parade Surgery decided to reach out to The Speech Recognition People and training experts: VoicePower Ltd.
After assessing their workflow system and discussing the needs and objectives of the practice, VoicePower recommended Dragon Medical speech recognition solution.
With an inbuilt medical vocabulary and compatibility with the SystmOne EPR System, this version is the perfect fit for East Parade Surgery.
Dragon Medical combines more than sixty medical speciality and subspecialty vocabularies with acoustic models based on the unique way clinicians speak.
When users are trained correctly, medical professionals can save up to an hour per day and create documentation three times faster than if they were typing.
Doctors in Training
All 6 of the GPs at the surgery are now using Dragon Medical speech recognition and opted into the VoicePower training to ensure they got off to the best start.
The training sessions are key to maximising investment and improving productivity. They are specially tailored to each user and designed to equip staff with the knowledge to achieve their objectives.
But what impact has the solution and training had on East Parade Surgery? Let’s find out!
Medical Speech Recognition – The Outcome
The team are now fully up and running and using Dragon Medical speech recognition for all clinical consultations, writing referral letters, and detailed reports, and documenting phone consultations.
The software is also occasionally used for emails and non-clinical work.
Most importantly, the team have agreed that the quality of their clinical documentation has improved.
Furthermore, East Parade Surgery was glad to have VoicePower’s support team to turn to with any problems. The team said that the support was “readily available” and the support team were “quick to respond” to any technical issues or questions.
Where Are They Now?
Having been using Dragon Medical for over three years now, Dr Dilley and the rest of the team are expert Dragon users and still enjoying the benefits of speech technology.
However, since VoicePower and East Parade Surgery (Mowbray Practice) began working together, a brand-new, cloud-based version of Dragon has been released: Dragon Medical One. Given how well the practice initially embraced speech recognition, VoicePower decided to set up Dr Dilley with a trial of Dragon Medical One so that he could compare/test the software to enable the Practice to decide if they would like to upgrade all of their users to the cloud solution.
Dragon Medical One is Nuance Communication’s cloud-based medical speech recognition software. Unlike previous versions, Dragon Medical One allows for flexible use that isn’t restricted to one PC. Furthermore, it is licenced via an annual subscription which is appealing to medical sites as they have the option to renew every 12 months.
Most importantly, Nuance Dragon Medical One has an in-built medical vocabulary and incredible integration with patient record systems, such as SystmOne that Dr Dilley and his colleagues use.
With the upgrade complete, we left Dr Dilley to enjoy his new and improved dictation experience.
Dr Dilley’s Verdict on Dragon Medical One
Having used Dragon Medical One for a few weeks, it was time for us to check in and see what Dr Dilley thought of the upgrade in terms of technical features and improvements.
In terms of how he uses the software throughout his working day, Dr Dilley explains: “I use it for all routine GP surgeries when seeing patients face to face to write notes, for most referrals, when writing within word documents and emails.”
“The biggest benefit is the speed and time it saves. I can touch type reasonably quickly but found Dragon both speeds up my workloads but also reduced repetitive strain from typing.” – Dr Dilley, GP
What’s more, Dr Dilley confirms: “My favourite thing about Dragon Medical One is the accuracy.”
As ever, VoicePower prides itself on supporting and advising its clients throughout their speech recognition journey and working with Dr Dilley was no different. Taking care of our long-standing customers is paramount, even if they have a solution that they’re happy with, we’re always thinking about how we can improve their workflow even further, and Dr Dilley’s upgrading to Dragon Medical One is a prime example of that.
